The Vietnam War had its origins in the broader Indochina wars of the s and ’50s, when nationalist groups such as Ho Chi Minh’s Viet Minh, inspired by Chinese and Soviet communism, fought the colonial rule first of Japan and then of French Indochina War broke out in and went on for eight years, with France’s war effort largely funded.

    In the governor general of indochina, Martial Merlin, proclaimed that French Indochina “is increasingly active, its influence grows, and its role as a Second Metropole, an outpost of France in Asia [ ] grows stronger.”¹ This “Pearl of Empire,” as French Indochina was known, occupied an important place in the colonial imaginary. Indochine unfolds as an extensive flashback narrated by Eliane Devries (Deneuve), a French woman who grew up on a rubber plantation in French Indochina. Her story begins with the funeral of her best friends, Prince N’Guyen and his wife, and her subsequent adoption of their young daughter, Camille.
